In a pioneering and monumental step, Hiranandani Foundation School International (HFSI) has set a new benchmark for sustainability by becoming the second school in India to implement the innovative 5-bin waste segregation policy. This landmark initiative ushers in a new era of environmental stewardship and sets an exemplary standard for educational institutions across the nation.

On August 28, 2024, the distinguished Afroz Shah Foundation graced the students of HFSI with a transformative and enlightening session, emphasizing the urgent need to protect our oceans and environment by curbing plastic consumption. The longstanding collaboration between HFSI and the Afroz Shah Foundation, now spanning six years, continues to thrive and elevate with the introduction of this forward-thinking policy.

Launched in partnership with the Afroz Shah Foundation, this initiative seeks to significantly reduce waste and champion eco-friendly practices among students, faculty, and staff. Mrs. Kaylani Patnaik, Head of School, eloquently expressed, “There is an urgent need for a conversation with nature. It is imperative that we learn the language of sustainability. Our coexistence with nature is not merely essential but should seamlessly guide our decisions and actions.”

Adv. Afroz Shah, renowned for his remarkable contributions to environmental conservation, has been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the UN’s highest international environmental accolade, “Champion of The Earth,” CNN-News18’s Indian of the Year in 2017, International Sensation by DARPAN-Canada in 2018, GQ Men of the Year in 2019, and the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice in July 2022. His impactful work has garnered praise from eminent global figures, including the Honourable Prime Minister of India.

During his visit, Adv. Shah engaged deeply with the students and teachers of HFSI, emphasizing the critical urgency to safeguard our oceans, wildlife, and environment. He noted, “This partnership marks a significant stride toward crafting a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.”

In a ceremonious inauguration, the students proudly unveiled the five meticulously designed bins, each designated for specific waste types: organic, recyclable, plastic, paper and glass, electronic, and metal waste. These bins, adorned with creative decorations by the students, symbolize their commitment to the environment.

The students’ pledge to refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle plastic has ignited a profound sense of responsibility and connection to our planet. This powerful commitment underscores that our efforts to protect the Earth are more than mere recycling; they are a testament to our love and respect for the world we cherish.

HFSI, in partnership with the Afroz Shah Foundation, eagerly anticipates continuing this journey together, working towards a sustainable future for our planet.
